I love marigolds, especially the diminutive French marigold for its blazing, vibrant color and profuse, curly petals. This image was taken in my garden. It was surrounded by weeds and rogue grass (as is the sad state of my garden...) My intent was to isolate the beautiful lines and curves of this bloom and intensify the color to make it pop on the black background.

I happened upon this little house sometime in 2010. The little barn, now collapsed, was still standing, albeit with a substantial lean. There were two old tractors in front of the house and just a lot of stuff strewn about. By the time this photo was taken, most of the stuff had been removed and a lot of the land cleared. The very last time I visited the house, there was a smoldering crater in the ground and the little house was gone.

Sleeping Beauty
This image was taken during a chance walk through the Zeeland Wetlands in Zeeland, Michigan. The sun was high and the bird was dozing close to the shadows of the bank of the pond. It was a perfect set up to isolate the bird in the photo, capturing the beautiful details of this stunning bird and its reflection and removing the dark, busy tangle of brush behind it. "Reaching for the Light", found in my On Black series, was taken that same day under the same conditions.

Telegraph Road
This image was taken with my cell phone while driving to Lansing on I-96 on a frosty March morning (my husband was behind the wheel). There was snow fog that morning and the landscape was stunning in its brightness. This image conveys a sense of isolation even though the subject is symbolic of communication.

Reaching for the Light
This is pickerel weed. It is found in ponds and wetlands. I saw this weed as I was walking through Zeeland Wetlands in Zeeland, Michigan. It was poking up in a patch of light surrounded by brush and shadow, a perfect capture to then isolate the weed and its reflection and manipulate the rest of the image into nothingness. While this is called a weed, I find it quite beautiful!
